  Sweat lodge / Kansi

The Sweat Lodge ceremony is a purification/prayer ceremony... giving us an opportunity to focus on intentions for our lives and our planet.

We gather and pray in connection with Spirit in sacred space, within a community. It is here, within the womb of the Earth Mother, that we will connect with Spirit on whatever level is available to each of us.The Sweat lodge is here for you whether you plan to go in or would like to spend quiet time at the sacred fire or on the land.

PROTOCOLS

We strongly suggest that people come early to be with the fire and/or assist in preparation for the ceremony. Cutting wood gathering blankets etc..

What to wear: For the sweat lodge, women need to bring a below-the-knee, short-sleeved, preferably cotton dress that can get dirty and wet, and wear this into the lodge. (Native people dress modestly, so please don't wear sleeveless, cleavage, slits up the sides, etc.) Men wear long shorts and cotton T-shirt or bare chests. Some people also bring a towel to sit on, others prefer to sit on the ground.

covering-dome-1.jpg

Some people bring a towel to cover their heads if the lodge gets too hot, but putting your head down close to the ground achieves same purpose.

Do keep in mind that it is just that heat that helps everyone, that heals, that pushes you out of your "mind" and into your body, into the here and now. The sweat lodge is a purification for body, mind and soul.

If you have been to Sweat lodge and are bringing someone with you who has not please spend some time teaching what you know about Sweat lodge and procedure.

Items to Bring:

Tobacco. As an offering to the water pourer or fire keeper in a pouch or in the form of a prayer tie.

Water. We prefer you bring a gallon and a cup to cut down on the plastic bottles.

Drink water the day before and before going into the lodge.

2 towels. One for inside the lodge and one for drying with later.

A chair if you wish.

Some light snacking food if you wish before the lodge. Fasting is observed once the lodge begins.

Instruments. Hand drum or rattle if you have one. Not required.

Healthy food to share for the fest after the sweat.

 Flashlight

Donation [$50 are suggested, more and less and appreciated]

The Sweat lodge will take place rain, shine or snow. Dress appropriately.  clothes to change in and keeping warm etc.

Everyone attending the ceremony usually brings a covered dish (please let us know what you are bringing) to share with all for feast following ceremony. It is important that all share in this feast, for not only does it give everyone an opportunity to get to know each other, it helps ground everyone after the sweat  and the feast is considered to be part of the ceremony.

Please bring good cheer, a good heart, and strong, solid prayer for those who have asked for a helping hand! We are not only  there to pray for ourselves, it is a time to focus exclusively on the people who are asking for healing, to create that one heart, one mind, one prayer.

All people who attend are strongly encouraged to participate in all aspects of the ceremony.

All people are welcome, including children. If children do not feel comfortable entering lodge a few people may be designated as  babysitters,” and kids usually just fall asleep. But children are welcome to participate in all aspects of ceremony. If a child feels uncomfortable in the sweat lodge after entering, it is perfectly ok for them to say so and they can leave the lodge between rounds. If you bring children, please also be prepared to come out of ceremony to care for them if they prefer not to be in ceremony themselves; we don’t always have people to babysit.

Drugs, alcohol and firearms are forbidden. Anyone who seems to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be allowed to participate in ceremony. We will help you prepare yourself and you are welcome to come to the next lodge. We also ask that everyone please respect the home and land where the ceremony is held. We were taught by the elders to “leave a place nicer than what you found it when you arrived,”

Important: For women, if you are moon time for the ceremony (menstruating), please do let us know when you arrive, for there are aspects of the ceremony which you do not need to participate in during this most sacred of times, moon time. It is extremely important that you alert us and that you understand that, since you are in your own powerful ceremony, you will not need to participate in making prayer ties, the sweat lodge ceremony or the pipe. We will set up the moon women in a area close to the fire and create the moon lodge. Or you can choose to remain indoors.
